Summary From the French meaning "Little Mary," marionettes have been used since the Middle Ages in puppet performances. One of the first figures to be made into a marionette was the Virgin Mary, hence the name. In the 18th century, many operas were written specifically for an all-marionette cast and the puppets became popular playthings in the 1800s.
