It was a period when theatre and opera worlds mixed, venues were shared, and agents and managers collaborated and competed. Through primary sources, many analysed for the first time, Woodfield examines such issues as finances, recruitment policy, the handling of singers and composers, links with Paris and Italy, and the role of women in opera management. These key topics are also placed within the context of a personal dispute between two of the most important managers of the day, the woman writer Frances Brooke and the actor David Garrick, which influenced the running of the major venues, the King's Theatre, Drury Lane and Covent Garden. Woodfield has also uncovered new information concerning the influential role of the eighteenth-century music historian and critic Charles Burney, as artistic advisor to the King's Theatre.--Publisher description. 588 0 Print version record. 610 20 King's Theatre (London, England)|xManagement. 610 20 King's Theatre (London, England) 610 20 King's Theatre (Londres, Angleterre) 610 27 King's Theatre (London, England)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00695014 610 27 King's Theatre (Londres, Angleterre)|2rasuqam 648 7 1700 - 1799|2fast 650 0 Theater management|zEngland|zLondon|y18th century. 650 0 Opera|zEngland|zLondon|y18th century. 650 7 MUSIC|xGenres & Styles|xOpera.|2bisacsh 650 7 Management.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01007141 650 7 Opera.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01046145 650 7 Theater management.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01149344 650 7 18e siècle.|2rasuqam 650 7 Opéra.|2rasuqam 650 7 Gestion.|2rasuqam 651 7 England|zLondon.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204271 651 7 Londres (Angleterre)|2rasuqam 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWoodfield, Ian.|tOpera and drama in eighteenth-century London.|dNew York : Cambridge University Press, ©2001|z0521800129|w(DLC) 00062178 |w(OCoLC)45230460 830 0 Cambridge studies in opera. 914 ocm60314298 994 93|bGTK
