Summary In the fifth image, the wife and her lover, the lawyer, have taken a room in a bagnio, which in Hogarth's time came to mean a place where there were prostitutes available and you could rent rooms without questions being asked. The husband has discovered them in the act, although his presence in the bagnio suggests he may have been making use of the facilitiesℓhimself. He and the lawyer have dueled and the husband is fatally wounded. As the lawyer, half-clothed,ℓescapes out of the window, the wife begs forgiveness.
