The Danube Delta (Romania) - Europe's largest wetlands, the Danube Delta, is blanketed with a dense expanse of reeds, a bountiful untouched natural environment that is a paradise for wild birds. The Danube River, made famous by the popular piece of music the Blue Danube, is Europe's second largest river. The river originates in Germany's Black Forest region. The Danube Delta stretches out across the estuary of the Danube River which opens onto the Black Sea. As many as 300 species of birds live in this vast swathe of wetlands. Great Barrier Reef (Australia) - The Great Barrier Reef, a 2000 kilometer stretch of colorful coral, is a paradisiacal habitat for marine creatures. Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef, is situated off the eastern coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia. The reef, ranges from 20 kilometers to 240 kilometers in width, is 2000 kilometers long, and is dotted with 700 large and small islands. Pleasure boats ply the calm sheltered waters that lie within the reef area. |
