'A strong leader' is the answer most often given. This book looks instead at a middle level of society. Middle classes in provincial towns around the vast archipelago mediate between the state and society and help to constitute state power. 'Middle Indonesia' is a social zone connecting extremes. This book examines the rise of an indigenous middle class in one provincial town far removed from the capital city. Spanning the late colonial to early New Order periods, it develops an unusual, associational notion of political power. 'Soft' modalities of power included non-elite provincial people in the emerging Indonesian state. At the same time, growing inequalities produced class tensions that exploded in violence in 1965-1966. 546 English. 650 0 Middle class|zIndonesia|zKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur) 650 0 City and town life|zIndonesia|zKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur) 650 7 City and town life.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00862081 650 7 Economic history.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00901974 650 7 Middle class.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01020437 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919811 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE / Minority Studies.|2bisacsh 651 0 Kupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia)|xSocial conditions. 651 0 Kupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia)|xEconomic conditions. 651 7 Indonesia|zKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01312976 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKlinken, Geert Arend van.|tMaking of middle Indonesia.|dLeiden ; Boston : Brill, 2014 |z9789004265080|z9004265082|w(DLC) 2013043761 830 0 Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde ;|v293. 830 0 Power and place in Southeast Asia ;|vv. 5. 914 ocn994510863 994 92|bCKE
