Summary Tattooed somewhere in every mind is the sensual memory of a mother's young body and enveloping love. In God is a Woman, Venezuelan psychoanalyst Rafael E. Lopez-Corvo links the force of this impression with the maddening power that women exert over men. The roots of violence toward women, he argues, are in fact based on man's eternal longing for his mother and envy of her reproductive capacity. Guilt-ridden by their erotic and reproductive power, women collude with men's envy of them and struggle against the biological and psychological qualities that distinguish them from men. Women search for their rights in a confused way and in the wrong direction - by idealization of men and imitation of their apparent freedom, political power, and money.
Masculinity becomes exalted and femininity devalued, and women become progressively masculinized. In his bold analysis, Lopez-Corvo suggests that the answer is not to give up the struggle, but to stop the fight. Women should search inside, within the mystery of their own femininity, for their own identity, and find the place where God could be a woman.
