Summary Ah! Wilderness is a domestic comedy in four acts, centering on Eugene O'Neill's nostalgic memories of turn-of-the-century family life in New England. The play is structured around the growing-up experiences of Richard Miller as he rebels against small-town morality in his reading, politics, and idealistic romance. Strong family ties and patient parental attention help Richard to resist temptation and accept the positive qualities of his domestic situation.
In "All God's chillun got wings" Jim Harris, clumsy, intelligent, and ambitious, is a black reared in a New York slum district, where he adores Ella Downey, a white girl who spurns him when she begins to feel the force of race prejudice.
In "Beyond the horizon" O'Neill crafted a tale of missed opportunities and failed dreams, involving two brothers. Robert, a poetic but sickly dreamer, wants to go to sea to strengthen his health and see the world. His brother, Andrew, is a born farmer who wants nothing more than to work on his family's farm. Because they love the same woman, both brothers choose to go against their natures. Robert stays on the farm, and Andrew goes to sea.
