Summary The False Face society was among the best-known medicinal societies in the Iroquois. The members wore dramatic wooden masks that were used in healing rituals, which invoked the spirit of an old hunched-backed man, the False Face Spirit. Membership to the society was exclusively granted to those cured by the society or those who dreamt that they should join.
