Summary Turner was inspired to paint The Slave Ship after reading about the transatlanticℓslave trade. The painting's dark red color reflects the ominous subject matter of the painting: African slaves being thrown overboard a slave ship. This is based on a real event that happened in 1781, when 133 slaves were thrown overboard from the Zong.ℓTurner was a genius at painting atmosphere and feeling. The ship and its inhabitants barely hold onto life amidst the rocky sea.ℓ
