Summary This Victorian drawing depicts the Battle of Stirling Bridge, which took place on September 11, 1297 as part of the Scottish Wars of Independence. The battle was led on the Scottish side by Andrew Moray and William Wallace, who defeated the combined English forces of John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey and Hugh de Cressingham, near Stirling at the River Forth. The battle proved that, in certain circumstances, an infantry attack could be superior to cavalry, as demonstrated here.
