Summary This painting depicts the Battle of Salamis, which took place in September of 480 B.C. between an alliance of Greek city-states and the Persian Empire. It was a major naval battle that took place in the straights between the mainland and Salamis, an island near Athens, and is considered the turning point of the Greco-Persian wars for the Greek's victory against the Persians.
