Summary This painting shows the aftermath of the Battle of Quiberon Bay. The engagement was one of the decisive battles of the Seven Years' War that took place off the coast of France near St. Nazaire between the French and British on November 20, 1759. British Admiral Sir Edward Hawke's fleet of 24 ships caught 21 French ships and sank, captured and ran aground several, while dispersing the remainder. The battle destroyed the French fleet's power and caused economic devastation, even eventually causing France to default on its debt, as financiers realized the power of the British Navy to take France's resources by sea, both in Europe and in the colonies.
