'St Paul?s Cathedral' in the City of London was built in 1675?1711 to the designs of Sir Christopher Wren and has been described as an iconic building many times. 00In this major new account, John Schofield examines the cathedral from an archaeological perspective, reviewing its history from the early 18th to the early 21st century, as illustrated by recent archaeological recording, documentary research and engineering asssessment. A detailed account of the construction of the cathedral is provided based on a comparison of the fabric with voluminous building accounts which have survived and evidence from recent archaeological investigation. The construction of the Wren building and its embellishments are followed by the main works of later surveyors such as Robert Mylne and Francis Penrose. 00The 20th century brought further changes and conservation projects, including restoration after the building was hit by two bombs in World War II, and all its windows blown out. The 1990s and first years of the present century have witnessed considerable refurbishment and cleaning involving archaeological and engineering works. Archaeological specialist reports and an engineering review of the stability and character of the building are provided. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 600 10 Wren, Christopher,|cSir,|d1632-1723|xCriticism and interpretation. 600 17 Wren, Christopher,|cSir,|d1632-1723.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00058942 610 20 St. Paul's Cathedral (London, England)|xHistory. 610 27 St. Paul's Cathedral (London, England)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00535362 610 27 Saint Paul's Cathedral|gLondon.|2gnd 650 0 Excavations (Archaeology)|zEngland|zLondon. 650 0 Cathedrals|zEngland|zLondon. 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xBuildings|xReligious.|2bisacsh 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Antiquities.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00810745 650 7 Buildings.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00840962 650 7 Cathedrals.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00849073 650 7 Excavations (Archaeology)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00917564 650 7 Architektur.|2gnd 650 7 Ausstattung.|2gnd 650 7 Kirchenbau.|2gnd 651 0 London (England)|xAntiquities. 651 0 London (England)|xBuildings, structures, etc. 651 7 England|zLondon.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204271 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSchofield, John, 1948-|tSt Paul's Cathedral.|dPhiladelphia : Oxbow Books, 2016 |z9781785702754|w(DLC) 2016025723 914 ocn951465484 994 92|bGTK
