Summary This watercolor painting by Jean Baptiste Antoine de Verger shows various soldiers who fought in the American Revolution. On the left is shown a black solider from the First Rhode Island Regiment. It's estimated that over 5,000 African American soldiers fought in the Revolution, and though most of those numbers were spread throughout the various New England Regiments, the First Rhode Island Regiment consisted of 197 black men commanded by white officers, and was considered an elite unit.
