Summary All is now lost for Tom and we see him incarcerated in the London debtors' prison called The Fleet. His angry wife is berating him for the loss of her fortune. Sarah and their child are also present, though she is unable to help him now and has fainted. Hogarth was familiar with The Fleet as his own father was imprisoned there for debt when Hogarth was about 10 years old.
