Summary This program looks at the growth of the urban area of Australia's largest city and the features of new outer suburbs and their liveability. Focus shifts to older inner suburbs that have gone through decline and are now being renewed as part of Sydney's urban renewal programs that support urban consolidation. The case study of this is City West or the suburbs of Darling Harbour, Pyrmont and Ultimo. This was once an important area of shipping, factories, warehouses and housing for the local workers. With shifts in the location of these landuses plus neglect and decay these areas became run down, blighted and unattractive. With State and Federal Government and private sector initiatives these suburbs have been transformed into liveable residential and commercial areas in one of the World's largest urban redevelopments. With this case study of how this transformation can be done and contrasts to the earlier examples of new suburbs that have been planned before any development occured. Liveability has different characteristics in these outer and inner suburbs and the residents who live there have different needs, socio-economic and demographic features. A look at urban dynamics in a developed economy. Directd and scripted by Geographer/Filmmaker Steve Weingarth.
