Los Angeles was embroiled in efforts to desegregate its public school district, one of the largest and most segregated in the country. Tensions came to a head as the state implemented its forced busing plan, a radical integration program that was hotly contested among Los Angeles residentsùparticularly among Valley residents and at all levels of the courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. 520 In My Los Angeles in Black and (Almost) White, the Granada Hills High School basketball team serves as the entry point for a trenchant exploration of the judicial, legislative, and neighborhood battles over school desegregation that gripped the city in the aftermath of Brown volume Board of Education and that continue to plague our "postracial" nation. Furman accesses a diverse array of opinions on these years and on the current crisis of race and public education by examining landmark judicial decisions, public policy studies, and newspaper articles, and by interviewing key community leaders, including former U.S. representative Bobbi Fiedler, the Jewish activist who led the campaign to stop forced busing in Los Angeles, and retired Superior Court judge Paul Egly, with whom Fiedler and her allies wrangled. Furman also documents a recent visit to Los Angeles during which he met with several of his former teammates, coaches, and neighbors. At once critical and fair-minded, My Los. 520 Angeles in Black and (Almost) White cuts through the incendiary rhetoric surrounding school desegregation to offer a lucid, engaging, and informed account of our long legacy and current challenges regarding race and public education. --Book Jacket. 600 10 Furman, Andrew,|d1968-|vAnecdotes. 600 17 Furman, Andrew,|d1968-|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01991412 610 20 Granada Hills High School (Los Angeles, Calif.) |xBasketball. 610 27 Granada Hills High School (Los Angeles, Calif.)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01925608 650 0 Basketball|xSocial aspects|zCalifornia|zSan Fernando Valley. 650 0 School integration|zCalifornia|zSan Fernando Valley. 650 0 Segregation in education|zCalifornia|zSan Fernando Valley. 650 7 GAMES|xGambling|xSports.|2bisacsh 650 7 SPORTS & RECREATION|xBusiness Aspects.|2bisacsh 650 7 SPORTS & RECREATION|xEssays.|2bisacsh 650 7 SPORTS & RECREATION|xHistory.|2bisacsh 650 7 SPORTS & RECREATION|xReference.|2bisacsh 650 7 TRAVEL|xSpecial Interest|xSports.|2bisacsh 650 7 SPORTS & RECREATION|xBasketball.|2bisacsh 650 7 Basketball.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00828203 650 7 Basketball|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00828233 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 School integration.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01107474 650 7 Segregation in education.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01111221 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919811 651 0 San Fernando Valley (Calif.)|xRace relations. 651 0 San Fernando Valley (Calif.)|xSocial conditions. 651 0 Los Angeles (Calif.)|xRace relations. 651 0 Los Angeles (Calif.)|xSocial conditions. 651 7 California|zLos Angeles.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204540 651 7 California|zSan Fernando Valley.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01242395 655 0 Electronic book. 655 7 Anecdotes.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01423876 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFurman, Andrew, 1968-|tMy Los Angeles in Black & (almost) White.|b1st ed.|dSyracuse, N.Y. : Syracuse University Press, 2010|w(DLC) 2010033492 830 0 Sports and entertainment. 914 ocn785782976 994 92|bCKE
