This painting shows Louis XIV receiving the Doge of Genoa at Versailles after the Bombardment of Genoa in 1685. While France was still at war with Spain during the War of Reunions, Genoa became a strategic stronghold of trade, and through bombardment of the city, France won control of the port city, and Genoa was greatly influenced by France for the next 100 years. |
