Summary This portrait shows a young King Louis XIV in his minority, victorious over the Fronde. The Fronde were a series of civil wars in France between 1648 and 1653 between the weakened nobility and judicial bodies (known as the Parlements) and the royal government. The eventual success of the monarchy in these conflicts paved the way for the absolutism of Louis XIV's later reign.
