Summary Another controversial and famous work from Swift, A Journal to Stella was published in 1766 in two parts, 20 years after the author's death. Consisting of 65 letters to his friend, Esther "Stella" Johnson, the work provides an intimate look into Swift's personal life and that of his dear friend. Born in 1681 and dying 17 years before Swift, Stella was the daughter of Lillian Johnson, a famous prostitute in the early 1700s. Admiring her for her cleverness, Swift published a small book of her witticisms called Bon Mots de Stella, which he appended to several volumes of Gulliver's Travels.
