In contrast to scholarship that depicts mainstream believers as enthusiastically and simplistically embracing the Eucharist, Challenging Communion: The Eucharist and Middle English Literature identifies a pervasive Middle English literary tradition that rejects simplistic notions of eucharistic promise. Through new readings of texts such as Piers Plowman, A Revelation of Love, The Book of Margery Kempe, and John Lydgate's religious poetry, Garrison shows how writers of Middle English often take advantage of the ways in which eucharistic theology itself contests the boundaries between the material and the spiritual, and how these writers challenge the eucharistic idea of union between Christ and the community of believers. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed January 31, 2017). 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 648 7 1100-1500|2fast 650 0 Lord's Supper in literature. 650 0 English literature|yMiddle English, 1100-1500|xHistory and criticism. 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM|xEuropean|xEnglish, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.|2bisacsh 650 7 English literature|xMiddle English.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01710961 650 7 Lord's Supper in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01002585 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM / European / English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.|2bisacsh 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 Electronic books.|2lcgft 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGarrison, Jennifer (Professor of English).|tChallenging communion.|dColumbus : The Ohio State University Press, [2017]|w(DLC) 2016043572 830 0 Interventions: new studies in medieval culture. 914 ocn970693687 994 92|bSTJ
