Summary This painting depicts King Aelous giving the winds to Odysseus. After defeating Polyphemus the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men stayed with Aeolus, king of the winds. He gave Odysseus the winds which were supposed to guide him home. However, while Odysseus slept, his men opened the bag, believing it to be gold, and released all of the winds with the exception of the West Wind, which would have led them home. Instead, they were driven back the way they had come.
