Summary Cassiopeia brought the wrath of Poseidon down on her country by claiming the beauty of her and her daughters to exceed that of the Nereids. Poseidon sent a sea serpent named Cetus to destroy man and beast, and the oracle of Ammon stated that until Cassiopeia's daughters were exposed to the monster, no relief would be found. Andromeda, daughter of Cassiopeia, was fastened to a rock as punishment. Perseus saved Andromeda and later married her after killing her betrothed, Phineus.
