Summary |
Charles Christian Nahl, a German immigrant, is often referred to as California's first commercial artist. Nahl'sℓdrawing depicts a confrontation between miners and squatters. The general atmosphere of the gold region was lawless and chaotic. Speculators were selling claims around Sacramento at exorbitant prices. Squatters, working the land without official claims, challenged legal proceedings against them and organized under Dr. Charles Robinson and Joseph Maloney. In 1850, the conflict came to a head, and shots were fired in downtown Sacramento, killing at least five. Eventually, the conflict cooled, but Nahl's drawing shows that the tension between squatters and land owners continued.ℓ |
