Summary During WWII, the U.S. Government started a classified project that used women pilots to move military aircraft on the home front in order to free up male pilots for combat duty. There were 1,074 female pilots in the WASP corps, and they logged more than 60 million miles of air time during the war. The WASP project was classified, and little was known of the program until the late 1970s when Congress finally agreed to declassify the records. At that time, the surviving WASP pilots were finally acknowledged and granted veterans status.
