Summary |
This allegorical painting shows Queen Elizabeth being beckoned by the goddess Juno with Athena and Venus. This suggests that the painting was commissioned to pressure Elizabeth into marriage. In that era, it was highly unusual for a queen to be unmarried. The English people worried about the succession, not wanting the crown to go to a foreigner after Elizabeth's passing, and her political advisors wanted the security of state that came only when legitimate heirs were produced. Elizabeth was notoriously worried about giving her power over to a man, which she had seen ruin many female rulers before her. She vowed very early on in her reign to never marry, and she upheld that promise toℓher death. |
