In 1989, news broadcasts all over the world were dominated for weeks by images of East Germans crossing the Berlin Wall to West Germany. The images, representing the fall of communism and the democratic will of the people, also showed East Germans' excitement at finally being able to enter the western consumer paradise. But what exactly had they expected to find on the other side of the Wall? Why did they shed tears of joy when for the first time in their lives, they stepped inside West German shops? And why were they prepared to pay more than 10 percent of their average monthly wage for a pineapple? Drawing on fifteen months of research in the fast-changing post- communist East Germany, Veenis unravels the perennial truths about the interrelationships of fantasies of material wealth, personal fulfillment and social cohesion. She argues persuasively that the far-fetched socialist and capitalist promises of consumption as the road to ultimate well-being, the partial realization and partial corruption thereof, the implicit social and psychological interests underlying the politicized promises in both countries form the breeding ground for the development of materialist, cargo-cult-like fantasies, in which material well-being came to be seen as the place of "fulfillment and ultimate arrival"."--Publisher's website. 588 0 Print version record. 611 27 Unification of Germany (1990)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01355185 648 7 Since 1990|2fast 650 0 Post-communism|zGermany (East) 650 0 Consumption (Economics)|zGermany (East) 650 0 Quality of life|zGermany (West) 650 0 Quality of life|zGermany (East) 650 7 Consumption (Economics)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00876455 650 7 Post-communism.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01072730 650 7 Quality of life.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01085009 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00977053 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919811 650 7 Verbrauch.|2gnd 651 0 Germany (East)|xRelations|zGermany (West) 651 0 Germany (West)|xRelations|zGermany (East) 651 0 Germany|xHistory|yUnification, 1990. 651 0 Germany|xSocial conditions|y1990- 651 7 Germany.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01210272 651 7 Germany (East)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01210274 651 7 Germany (West)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01210273 651 7 Germany|gDDR.|2gnd 651 7 Westliche Welt.|2gnd 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aVeenis, Milena.|tMaterial fantasies. |dAmsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, 2012 |z9789089644008|z9089644008|w(DLC) 2012476384 830 0 Technology and European history series ;|v6. 914 ocn829905896 994 92|bCKE
