Summary Rocks: the solid Earth materials: Discover the three ways rocks are formed and many of the properties of rocks and minerals -- like size, shape, color, and texture.
Uses of rocks and minerals: The rocks and minerals that form within the Earth are used to make many important materials. Witness how rocks are mined, processed, and then constructed into glass, cement, bricks, houses, roads, and other objects used in our everyday lives.
Earth science: a look at geology: Geology is the study of the Earth, its processes, its materials, its history and its effect on humans and life in general. Rocks, crystals, mountains, earthquakes, volcanoes, rivers, glaciers, landslides, floods, and many other subjects fall into this broad field of research. This program looks at how geologists perform a wide range of critical services, including determining the stability of building sites, finding abundant supplies of clean water and searching for valuable deposits of natural resources such as iron, coal, and oil. More importantly, they also work to minimize the threat to communities at risk from geologic hazards.
Gems, metals & minerals: This program answers questions such as "What is erosion?" "How many different kinds of rocks are there?" "What is coal?" and "What is an alloy?"
Physical geography II, Geology of caves and caverns: Illustrates what water can do below the earth's surface, over long periods of time. Using animated and real life sequences, this program explores some important caves, their formations and teaches students how underground water dissolves limestone to form caves, caverns, stalagmites, stalagtites and boxfork formations.
