Summary |
Choreographed by Gaspari Angiolini and composed by Christoph Willibald von Gluck, Don Juan was a ballet first performed in December of 1761. The work tells the story of Don Juan, a man in love with Donna Elvira. The performance opens with Don Juan serenading the young girl under a balcony somewhere in Madrid. Donna's father, the Commander, approaches Don Juan and raises his sword in an effort to protect his daughter. Don wounds the man, who finally dies because of the injury. Later, Don Juan holds a banquet for several of his friends. When the party commences, a thunderous knock is heard at the door. Don discovers there is a large marble statue of the dead Commander waiting for him. The statue invites Don to dinner at his tomb. After some conversation over dinner in the graveyard, Don Juan is swallowed up by the earth and transported to Hell. |
