Performer Lisa Solomon received her BA in Practice of Art from UC Berkeley in 1995 and her MFA from Mills College in 2003. She has been a working artist and educator - as both a college professor and workshop facilitator - for 15+ years. She is represented by Walter Maciel Gallery in Los Angeles. Her mixed media works and large scale installations that revolve thematically around personal history, re-interpreting domesticity, the nefarious line between ART and CRAFT and color theory have been exhibited in galleries, art fairs, and museum exhibitions (inter)nationally. More recently she's been incorporating social practice into her art making, relying on and inviting the public to help facilitate her work. Truth be told, she really kind of dreams of being an abstract oil painter. She has been an artist in residence at the Museum of Quilt and Textiles in San Jose, Palo Alto Art Center, The Oakland Museum, Irving Street Projects and Little Paper Planes in San Francisco, Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, Angels Gate Cultural Center in Los Angeles, The Ulrich Museum of Art in Wichita, Kansas, The Komi-Machi Kougen Museum, Japan. She has also written for and received multiple grants for projects including Artists Activating Communities from the California Arts Council, and the Creative Capacity Fund. Lisa's latest book - A Field Guide to Color was released in the Fall of 2019 (Roost Publishing). She is the illustrator of 20 Ways to Draw A Chair (Quarry Books 2015) and Draw 500 Everyday Things (Quarry Books 2016), author of Knot Thread Stitch - Exploring Creativity Through Embroidery and Mixed Media (Quarry Books, 2012). A monograph of her work, Hand/Made, was published by MIEL books in 2013. The work she makes tinkering in her backyard studio can be found in both public and private collections. Lisa currently resides in Oakland, California with her husband, daughter, a three-legged cat, a fluffy gray kitty, a pit-bull, a dachshund mutt and many, many spools of thread.
Summary For this month-long daily drawing challenge, we've added a twist. Artist and educator Lisa Solomon shows how to use overhead light and everyday objects to cast interesting shadows onto paper, then draw around the shadows to create outlines. What you do within the outlines is where the real fun begins. Each day, Lisa shares a new idea filling outlined shapes with color and texture, using everything from pens and graphite to watercolors and highlighters. This technique is a great way to experiment with composition and keep your drawing practice loose. Simply start with a shadow and allow yourself to play within the lines.
