The house of the broken angels is an epic family saga, headed by the patriarch Angelote, which takes place during the last birthday party that he celebrates at his home in San Diego on the occasion of his imminent death at the hands of a lethal cancer. But when Angelote's mother, Mama America, dies on dates close to the party, he must also organize his funeral and decides to hold two family events on the same weekend: a double farewell. Among the attendees is his namesake Angelin, who flies from Seattle to pay his respects and say goodbye, and he meets people with whom he shares a parent but, as the weekend does not stop reminding him, not his life. The story of Angelote and Angelín, what it means to be Mexican in the United States, to have lived two lives and crossed a border, and about how death brings out the parts of your life that you had forgotten, whether or not it was your own choice. The house of the broken angels, a finely chiseled portrait of this deeply complex family, is Urrea in its purest essence: bright and full of humor, authentic in every turn, this novel consolidates Urrea as the master storyteller of the truth.
