Warner begins by considering the possibility that Langland wrote a romance about a werewolf and bear-suited lovers, and he goes on to explore the methods of the poem's localization, and medieval readers' particular interest in its Latinity. Warner shows that the 'Protestant Piers' was a reaction against the poem's oral mode of transmission, reveals the extensive eighteenth-century textual scholarship on the poem by figures including the maligned Chaucer editor John Urry, and contextualizes its first modernization by a literary forger inspired by the 1790s Shakespeare controversies. This lively account of Piers Plowman challenges the way the poem has traditionally been read and understood"-- |cProvided by publisher. 542 1 |fThis work is licensed by Knowledge Unlatched under a Creative Commons license|uhttp://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by-nd/3.0 588 0 Print version record. 590 Cambridge University Press|bCambridge Open Access Books 600 10 Langland, William,|d1330?-1400?|xCriticism and interpretation. 600 10 Langland, William,|d1330?-1400?|xAuthorship. 600 10 Langland, William,|d1330?-1400?|tPiers Plowman|xCriticism, Textual. 600 17 Langland, William,|d1330?-1400?|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00029063 600 17 Langland, William|d1332-1400.|tPiers Plowman.|2gnd 630 07 Piers Plowman (Langland, William)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01716084 650 7 Literature and literary studies.|2bicssc 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM|xEuropean|xEnglish, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.|2bisacsh 650 7 POETRY|xEnglish, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.|2bisacsh 650 7 Authorship.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00822442 650 7 Stoff|gLiteratur.|2gnd 650 7 Textkritik.|2sao 650 7 Författarskap.|2sao 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411635 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWarner, Lawrence, 1968-|tMyth of Piers Plowman.|dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2014|z9781107043633|w(DLC) 2013033226 |w(OCoLC)861211818 830 0 Cambridge studies in medieval literature ;|v89. 914 ocn875289020 994 92|bSTJ
