Summary |
The Book of Exodus occupies a unique place in the Western canon. Its dramatic narrative tells the story of Moses, the mighty Hebrew lawgiver. In the first part of the book, Moses discovers his ethnic heritage, receives a commission from God, and stares down the Egyptian Pharaoh as he leads the Israelite people out of slavery in Egypt. The timeless story of a people's deliverance from captivity and journey to a Promised Land has resonated through more than three thousand years of recorded human history. The second part of the book deals with God's gift of the Ten Commandments to the Israelite peopleāa gift that has continued to symbolize divine order and obedience to the present day. Alan Hugh McNeile's commentary on the Book of Exodus attempts to unravel the mysteries of the text while shining a light on the sources and composition of the book. It contains an introduction reflecting the most up-to-date scholarship when the book was published in the early 20th century, a paraphrase of the text with notes on the most difficult passages, and numerous interpretive notes. |
