Summary The story follows Georges Duroy as he rises up from a peasant family to a successful journalist. However, his success is due to the ghost writing of Madame Forestier, the wife of his friend. Forestier was also responsible for the success of her husband. Duroy is determined to continue climbing the social—and economical—ladder. As his quest continues, his relationship with Forestier develops further complications.
