Summary "Emotion-focused family therapy (EFFT) is an innovative transdiagnostic approach to the treatment of mental health issues across the lifespan that involves caregivers for their healing power. EFFT can be used to treat many behavior or emotion-based disorders. The goal of EFFT is to support parents, partners, and other carers to increase their role in promoting the health and wellness of their loved ones. One of the key strengths of the EFFT approach is that EFFT clinicians can guide caregivers to provide home-based support, even when their loved one refuses or is unable to access service. This book serves as a clinical manual for the delivery of EFFT in the treatment of behavioral and mental health issues. It is intended to provide a comprehensive introduction to the model for those who are new to EFFT and a deepened understanding of its theory and application for those already familiar with the stance and its interventions. The book provides an in-depth description of its application in the context of eating disorders as an example of the therapeutic process that clinicians can apply to other disorders. Clinicians and students in the fields of psychology, social work, psychotherapy, and family counseling, including divinity counseling, will find the book useful whether they adopt EFFT as a primary approach or as an adjunct to other approaches. The five modules in EFFT include emotion coaching; behavior coaching; therapeutic apologies; caregiver blocks; and clinician blocks. The book is structured into eight chapters covering the above topics."--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved).
"This treatment manual provides mental health professional with guidelines for implementing emotion-focused family therapy (EFFT), an exciting new intervention in which caregivers are the primary healing agents in their loved ones' treatment. Initially created to treat eating disorders, the authors have developed EFFT into a transdiagnostic approach that can be applied to any emotion- or behavior-based disorder with various relationship dynamics across the lifespan, including parent-child relationships (even if the child is an adult) and romantic partnerships. The authors describe how to teach caregivers advanced skills for supporting their loved ones through emotion and behavior coaching. Therapists will also learn collaboratives strategies for strengthening healing bonds between the caregiver and the loved one and repairing relationship fractures. Techniques for processing caregivers' emotional blocks are also explored, as are methods for clinicians to work through their own blocks via supervision. Vivid case examples illustrate EFFT being implemented in a wide variety of realistic scenarios. Clinical handouts are included in the appendices and are also available online: http://pubs.apa.org/books/supp/lafrance"-- Provided by publisher.
