Summary |
The goal of this book is to assess the status of genetic research on behavior. The contributors assess progress and promise in both quantitative genetic analysis and molecular genetic analysis of behavior. Particularly significant is a new generation of genetic markers that has made it possible to identify genes for complex quantitative traits. These traits are influenced by multiple genes (QTLs) as well as by multiple environmental factors. The QTL perspective suggests that genetic variation is normal and has implications for thinking about mental illness, which has come to be seen as abnormal extremes of quantitative traits. The book focuses on those aspects of behavior about which behavioral genetics reveals the most. These include cognitive abilities and disabilities, personality, psychopathology, and psychopharmacology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved). |
