Summary Beginning with footage of Carl Akley's expedition in 1921 to the Belgian Congo to collect mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) specimens, this film briefly discusses the history of mountain gorilla research and protection in the Virunga Volcanoes area of Africa. The film then centers on observations of one family group near the Karisoke Research Center in the Parc National des Volcans of Rwanda. Gorillas are shown foraging, feeding and resting. Infants, including one only two days old, are seen with their mothers, breastfeeding, trying new foods, and riding on their mothers' backs. Infants and juveniles are seen at play, and vocalizations of all gorillas are heard. The film also discusses the gorilla diet, the role of play in establishing the group hierarchy, conservation and protection efforts, and the continuing loss of habitat. Gorillas are shown wandering outside the park in search of food, in view of local (human) inhabitants.
