Summary "In the several years since the publication of the first edition of this book, psychoanalysis has undergone continuing and expanding changes in theory and practice. These changes have included an increased emphasis on so-called preoedipal issues, attention to object-relations theory and practice, and the conceptualization of psychoanalysis as a "two-person" psychology. The authors present a psychoanalytic approach to doing psychotherapy. They also point out that Freud's writings on therapy and his recommendations are the foundations of this book. The book first provides a structure on which therapeutic tactics may be based, that is, a theory of psychopathology and of therapy. Then specific recommendations about made concerning how the therapist should structure the therapy and about how to instruct the client, respond to the client, and deal with transference responses and resistance. The book also discusses how the therapist interprets, how support is offered to the client, and how the therapist makes use of the client's dream reports. The changes that result from therapy, how one arrives at the decision to bring the therapy to a close, and how one brings it to a close are reviewed. Finally, special issues are examined, including: Is the therapy of women different? Which of the recently proposed approaches to psychoanalytic therapy should be adopted?"--Preface.
