Bibliography Includes bibliographical references and indexes.
Summary The goal of this book is to promote critical thinking among new and established investigators about how to design research and analyze research findings. Although the substantive focus of many chapters is on applications to the prevention of alcohol and substance abuse, nearly all of the methodological principles and statistical models are general and have potential application to the full range of areas in which prevention research takes place.
The book focuses on prospective longitudinal research and the measurement of risk and protective factors for alcohol misuse over time. It illustrates the definition, measurement, and modeling of temporal effects such as developmental trajectories and sequence of substance use. The book also examines the design and analysis of interventions that seek to change alcohol and other substance misuse and the physical and social consequences of that misuse. Particular emphasis is placed on the identification of effective components of interventions and the investigation of how these may interact with multiple levels of individual and environmental factors. Finally, the book concludes by examining specific methodological issues that have a significant impact on the quality of research projects.
