This book provides the most in-depth study of capital punishment in Scotland between the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth century to date. Based upon an extensive gathering and analysis of previously untapped resources, it takes the reader on a journey from the courtrooms of Scotland to the theatre of the gallows. It introduces them to several of the malefactors who faced the hangman's noose and explores the traditional hallmarks of the spectacle of the scaffold. It demonstrates that the period between 1740 and 1834 was one of discussion, debate and fundamental change in the use of the death sentence and how it was staged in practice. In addition, the study provides an innovative investigation of the post-mortem punishment of the criminal corpse. It offers the reader an insight into the scene at the foot of the gibbets from which criminal bodies were displayed, and around the dissection tables of Scotland's main universities where criminal bodies were used as cadavers for anatomical demonstration. In doing so it reveals an intermediate stage in the long-term disappearance of public bodily punishment. .--|cProvided by publisher. 590 SpringerLink|bSpringer Nature Open Access eBooks 650 0 Capital punishment|zScotland|xHistory|y18th century. 650 0 Capital punishment|zScotland|xHistory|y19th century. 650 0 Human dissection|zScotland|xHistory|y18th century. 650 0 Human dissection|zScotland|xHistory|y19th century. 650 02 1700s. 650 02 1800s. 650 7 Civilization.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00862898 650 7 Crime|xSociological aspects.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00883017 650 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00958235 650 7 Social history.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01122498 650 12 Capital Punishment. 650 12 Criminals|xhistory. 650 12 Dissection|xhistory. 651 0 Scotland|xSocial conditions|y18th century. 651 0 Scotland|xSocial conditions|y19th century. 650 22 Anatomy|xhistory. 650 22 Cadaver. 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204623 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBennett, Rachel E.|tCapital Punishment and the Criminal Corpse in Scotland, 1740-1834.|dCham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, 2018|z9783319620176|z3319620177 |w(OCoLC)989966242 830 0 Palgrave historical studies in the criminal corpse and its afterlife. 914 on1027631480 994 92|bSTJ
