Alexis de Tocqueville toured the United States in that year and was struck by the remarkable contributions made by Connecticut, and in July of 1831 while addressing a group of Americans he delivered the follwing grand sentiment: 'Connect-deCoot, de leetle yellow spot dat make de clock-peddler, de schoolmaster, and de senator. De first give you time, de second tell you what to do with him, and de tird make your law and your civilization.
