Northeast India borders China, the Himalayas, and Southeast Asia. Despite burgeoning interest in the region, little attention is given to the thousands of migrants leaving the region for Indian cities for refuge, work, and study. The stories of Northeast migrants reveal an everyday Northeast India rarely captured elsewhere and offer an alternative view of contemporary India. Northeast migrants covet the employment opportunities created by India's embrace of globalization; shopping malls, restaurants, and call centres. Yet Northeast migrants also experience high levels of racism, harassment, and violence. Far from simply victims of the city, Northeast migrants have created their own 'map' of Delhi, enabling a sense of belonging, albeit an uneasy one. Interdisciplinary in nature, this book will appeal to scholars of anthropology, urban studies, geography, migration, and Asian Studies."--Publisher's website. 588 0 Print version record. 650 0 Migration, Internal|zIndia|zDelhi. 650 0 Population geography|zIndia|zDelhi. 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xPublic Policy|xCultural Policy. |2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xAnthropology|xCultural.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xPopular Culture.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xAnthropology|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Asia.|2bicssc 650 7 India.|2bicssc 650 7 Indian sub-continent.|2bicssc 650 7 Migration, immigration and emigration.|2bicssc 650 7 Social issues and processes.|2bicssc 650 7 Society and culture: general.|2bicssc 650 7 Society and social sciences Society and social sciences. |2bicssc 650 7 Sociology and anthropology.|2bicssc 650 7 Migration, Internal.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01020741 650 7 Population geography.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01071591 650 7 Zuwanderung.|2gnd 650 7 Zuwanderer.|2gnd 650 7 Lebensbedingungen.|2gnd 651 7 India|zDelhi.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01205766 651 7 India|zNordost.|2gnd 651 7 Delhi.|2gnd 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMcDuie-Ra, Duncan.|tNortheast migrants in Delhi.|dAmsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, ©2012 |z9089644229|w(OCoLC)808077147 830 0 IIAS publications series.|pMonographs ;|v9. 914 ocn820850478 994 92|bCKE
