Summary |
Providing a rich history and detailed diagrams of various Japanese swords, this volume posits that the swords of Japan are the most effective and require the most skill to handle. The most commonly known type of Japanese sword is the katana, a single-edged, curved long sword worn by samurai. Authentic Japanese swords were made by a select group of bladesmiths and required much precision and attention to detail to execute properly. After the Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century, soldiers required swords that were more powerful, but thinner, in order to slice through theâ„“leather armor of enemies. These requirements led to the first katanas, and samurai swords have been distinctly different from their Western counterparts ever since. |
