The long history of conflict around the city of Hûé produced belts of degraded lands and village societies deeply marred by the demands of war or periods of conflict. Once military units occupy a space, they change it in physical, legal, and cultural terms so that even long after the troopers leave, their footprints continue to shape patterns of land use and local memories of place. There are tombs, cemeteries, and war monuments; and there are the spaces in between, the subterrains of "wilderness" haunted by ghostlike presences of suspected chemical or munitions hazards. Digging below the surface, one risks being maimed by unexploded ordnance, getting ill from toxic chemical residues, or perhaps worst of all, being haunted by the ghosts of war dead who died violently or did not receive proper burials. Critical to this study are previously little used archives of maps and images created by technologies developed at the same time as the Indochinese wars, 1945 to 1975: aerial photography, high-altitude photography, satellite photography, and satellite-based, multi-band scanning. In this richly illustrated book, author David Biggs uses these new kinds of imagery to reveal the impact of war in the land"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 647 7 Indochinese War|d(1946-1954)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00970511 647 7 Vietnam War|d(1961-1975)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01431664 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 War|xEnvironmental aspects|zVietnam, Central. 650 0 Indochinese War, 1946-1954|xEnvironmental aspects|zVietnam, Central. 650 0 Vietnam War, 1961-1975|xEnvironmental aspects|zVietnam, Central. 650 7 HISTORY / Military / Vietnam War.|2bisacsh 650 7 Ecology.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00901476 650 7 War|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01170340 651 0 Vietnam, Central|xHistory, Military|y20th century. 651 0 Vietnam, Central|xEnvironmental conditions. 651 7 Vietnam|zVietnam, Central.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01287612 655 7 Military history.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411630 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBiggs, David A.|tFootprints of war. |dSeattle : University of Washington Press, [2018] |z9780295743868|w(DLC) 2018003967|w(OCoLC)1022084500 830 0 Weyerhaeuser environmental book. 914 on1022075264 994 92|bCKE
