This book focussing on the experience of contemporary Australian intellectuals explores an aspect as of yet scarcely studied within the global phenomenon of travel to Italy, and discovers an image of the country starkly different from the one that prevailed in previous writings. From the beginning of the 1990s onwards there has been a sizeable output of books by Australian writers set in or about Italy. After a meticulous examination of these works, Roberta Trapé has selected and analysed those that she considers the most interesting examples of Australians' continuing fascination with Italy works of Jeffrey Smart and Shirley Hazzard, and of Robert Dessaix and Peter Robb. Examining the ways the four authors describe Italian places, Imaging Italy looks into what it is that continues to attract Australian writers and artists to the country, and tries to detect new trends in their attitude towards it. the image of Italy that emerges from the most recent works is, no doubt, a superb picture not flattering but certainly not false of its contemporary times. 588 0 Print version record. 648 7 1900-2099|2fast 650 0 Australians|xTravel|zItaly. 650 0 Travelers' writings, Australian|y20th century|xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Travelers' writings, Australian|y21st century|xHistory and criticism. 650 7 TRAVEL|zEurope|zItaly.|2bisacsh 650 7 Literature & literary studies.|2bicssc 650 7 Literary studies: post-colonial literature.|2bicssc 650 7 Travel writing.|2bicssc 650 7 Australians|xTravel.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00821517 650 7 Travel.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01155558 650 7 Travelers' writings, Australian.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01155727 650 7 Italienbild.|2gnd 650 7 Reisebericht.|2gnd 651 0 Italy|xDescription and travel. 651 7 Italy.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204565 651 7 Australia.|2gnd 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411635 776 08 |iPrint version:|aTrapè, Roberta.|tImaging Italy through the eyes of contemporary Australian travellers (1990- 2010).|dNewcastle upon Tyne, UK : Cambridge Scholars, 2011 |z1443831972|w(OCoLC)741733790 914 ocn836848944 994 92|bCKE
