Summary "Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview: #1 The effects of trauma often last beyond the initial event. They manifest in intense physical, emotional, and perceptual reactions to everyday things that are often triggered by seemingly innocuous reminders of the original situation. #2 The Living Legacy of Trauma is a term used to describe the array of symptoms and difficulties that are common among individuals who have been traumaized. These symptoms tend to either be blamed on themselves or on the immediate environment. #3 The prefrontal cortex, our thinking and perceiving brain, is theoretically designed to hold the veto power. If the stimulus is recognized as benign, the amygdala is not supposed to respond. But when something might be threatening, the amygdala stimulates the brain to turn on the sympathetic nervous system, initiating an adrenaline stress response that prepares the body to fight or flee. #4 If you have been blamed or shamed for what happened, you may want to turn to the end of this chapter and complete Worksheet 2: How Did Your Symptoms Help You Survive. Understanding how these symptoms have helped you survive is the first step to changing your relationship to them."-- Provided by Freading.
