Summary
Karl Oskar Nilsson and his family and friends arrive from Sweden in 1850 to face the struggles in their new American homeland. In this book the emigrants disembark in New York City. Their journey to a new home in Minnesota Territory takes them by riverboat, steam wagon, Great Lakes steamship, and oxcart to Chisago County. Each settler is entitled to 160 acres, but arriving too late to plant a crop, Nilsson, his family, and friends face particular hardships in their first year in America.
