Summary In 1867 young John Muir, freshly committed to the study of the natural world, undertook a walk of 1,000 miles from Indiana to Florida. In this book he states that he had no pre-planned route in mind, rather the “wildest, leafiest, and least trodden way I could find.” His book is well regarded for its descriptions of the American countryside in the years of the Civil War, especially his descriptions of Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. This illustrated edition ofℓA Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf includes some of Muir’s original sketches.
