This study, conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture, offers information on what elements land should feature in order to grow healthy coffee trees. The 1917 experiment was conducted in Puerto Rico. Hawaii, which joined the Union in 1959, would later become the only U.S. state that would produce coffee.
