It was the terrifying sound of what would become the United States' deadliest landslide in decades. The equivalent of one million dump truck loads of earth came plummeting down the valley. In a little over two minutes, a pile of debris up to 75 feet deep slammed into the neighborhood of close to 50 homes. While a massive search and rescue effort continues at the site, geologists are tracing the geological history of Oso to explain why the site was so unstable. But all around the world, scientists have reason to fear that the worst is yet to come. Globally, landslides and other ground failures take a tremendous human and economic toll, and with climate change bringing a sharp rise in precipitation, the threat of bigger, more frequent landslides is growing. As NOVA surveys landslide danger zones, discover how and why landslides happen, and how radar monitoring technologies could help issue life-saving warnings. 521 8 Not rated. 538 Mode of access: World Wide Web. 650 0 Landslides|zWashington (State)|zOso. 650 0 Landslides|zWashington (State)|zSnohomish County. 650 0 Landslides|xResearch. 650 0 Mudslides|zWashington (State)|zOso. 650 0 Mudslides|zWashington (State)|zSnohomish County. 650 0 Mudflows|zWashington (State)|zSnohomish County. 650 0 Disaster victims|zWashington (State)|zSnohomish County. 650 0 Rescue work|zWashington (State)|zSnohomish County. 650 0 Landslide hazard analysis. 650 0 Slopes (Soil mechanics) 650 0 Soil liquefaction. 650 0 Geomorphology. 650 0 Radar in earth sciences. 651 0 Oso (Wash.) 651 0 Snohomish County (Wash.) 651 0 Stillaguamish River Watershed (Wash.) 700 1 Clark, Liesl.|4drt|4pro|4aus|4cng 700 1 Dunoyer, Jean.|4edm 700 1 Sechler, Craig.|4nrt 730 0 hoopla (Digital media service) 830 0 Nova (Television program) 914 MWT11867294
